A competition day has no pause button. The tooling that kept it coordinated — and the start of what became Whistle.
The EJ Cup is a live competition where a lot happens in a short window: matches scheduled, results recorded, scoreboards kept current, and organisers, competitors and spectators all kept on the same page in real time. When something runs long or a result changes, the whole day has to adapt on the spot.
Off-the-shelf tools and spreadsheets fall apart the moment an event drifts off schedule. The day needed tooling that stayed accurate under pressure and could be run by a small team without a manual.
We built the event technology and ran live operations on the day — a system to manage the schedule and brackets, drive the scoreboards, and give operators one place to keep everything current as the competition ran. One source of truth; every screen read from the same state, so nothing showed a stale number.
Running technology at a live event is the hardest test of reliability — no staging environment, no forgiving audience. It's the same standard we hold every system to: correct, legible, and calm under pressure. Whistle grew directly out of this work.
